Cincinnati committed to mostly buying electric vehicles. Turns out it's not that easy
Cincinnati |
Officials in Cincinnati pledged to solely purchase electric vehicles for the city fleet as long as that choice was offered. Due to labour and supply chain issues, every purchase effort has been delayed or terminated over a year later
Ford recently cancelled the city's purchase for two electric cars for the police department, according to city manager Sheryl Long
As Long explained, "We're hanging onto cars with 200,000 miles on them with the intention of replacing them with electric cars, but then your orders are cancelled and you have to pivot quickly
Long claims that although they were able to locate another supplier who could offer two conventional automobiles, even they are difficult to come by. She claims that one of the issues is that the city only needs to purchase a handful at a time, thus she is attempting to get around this through collaborative partnerships
According to Long, a cooperative is simply just us teaming up with other governments to effectively have more purchasing power. The issue with it, and the reason for the hesitation, is that it pulls us out of our local economy
Additionally, the city has less influence when it comes to negotiating the contract's pricing and other parameters. But, according to Long, they must be adaptable
It's a typical strategy for other municipal requirements, such as ordering road salt from the Ohio Department of Transportation rather than on one's own
Ollie Kroner, the city's director of environment and sustainability, said, "There is a contract that we've purchased from in the past and that now more than 100 communities have purchased from. So this is a vehicle that we may use to buy cars
